BMW has started testing a humanoid robot named AEON at its Leipzig plant in Germany, in collaboration with Hexagon Robotics.
AEON has a human-like upper body with wheeled legs, allowing it to roll or step across the factory floor, and can be equipped with different tools for tasks like battery assembly and component manufacturing.
This pilot follows lab tests and a short deployment in December 2025, with further trials planned for April 2026 and a full pilot in summer 2026.
BMW previously tested humanoid robots at its Spartanburg, South Carolina plant, where a robot handled over 90,000 parts during X3 production to assess precision and repetitive task performance, Thomas Net has reported.
The company is advancing its Physical AI program, integrating AI with robotics across factories to improve automation, quality checks, and production efficiency.
