ICE confirms a measles outbreak in the nation’s largest detention facility in Texas

At least 14 cases of measles have been confirmed at ICE’s Camp East Montana detention facility in El Paso, Texas, prompting officials to isolate affected detainees and cohort 112 others as a precaution.

The facility, located on Fort Bliss, has been closed to visitors and attorneys due to the outbreak.

Camp East Montana, which houses nearly 3,000 detainees in tent-style structures, has faced multiple crises since opening last year, including three deaths in custody.

Rep. Veronica Escobar called for the facility to be shut down and for an investigation into its contractor, Acquisition Logistics LLC, which was awarded a $1.2 billion contract despite limited prior experience, NBC News has reported.

ICE says it provides comprehensive medical care, but the outbreak has heightened scrutiny over conditions at the nation’s largest detention center.
