Legendary college football coach Lou Holtz, who led Notre Dame to its last national championship in 1988, has died at 89, the university announced.
Holtz coached for 33 seasons, compiling a 249-132-7 record at schools including Notre Dame, Arkansas, South Carolina, and NC State, with a brief stint in the NFL with the New York Jets.
He is credited with lasting traditions at Notre Dame, such as removing names from jerseys and introducing the “Play Like A Champion” sign.
After retiring from coaching in 1996, Holtz worked as a CBS and ESPN analyst, returning briefly to revive South Carolina’s football program, NBC News has reported.
He is survived by four children; his wife Beth passed away in 2020.
