NATO Air Defenses Shoot Down Iranian Missile Headed Toward Turkey

A ballistic missile fired from Iran was intercepted by NATO defenses in the eastern Mediterranean as it headed toward Turkish airspace, according to Turkey’s defense ministry.

U.S. and Western officials said the missile was likely aimed at Incirlik Air Base, which hosts American and allied troops.

The missile was reportedly shot down by an SM-3 interceptor launched from the USS Oscar Austin shortly before midnight Tuesday, with debris falling in Turkey’s Hatay province and causing no injuries.

A strike on Turkey could have marked a major escalation and potentially triggered NATO’s mutual defense clause, the New York Times has reported.

NATO condemned the incident and reaffirmed support for Turkey, while Turkish officials protested to Tehran and pledged to defend their airspace.
