State Rep. James Talarico won the Texas Senate Democratic primary over Congresswoman Jasmine Crockett in a high-spending, hard-fought contest, keeping Democratic hopes alive for a November upset in the traditionally Republican state.

Talarico will face the winner of a May runoff between Republican Sen. John Cornyn and MAGA favorite Ken Paxton, a race likely influenced by any endorsement from former President Donald Trump.

No Democrat has won a statewide race in Texas since 1988, but Talarico declared, “We’re about to take back Texas,” signaling ambition for a historic win.

Crockett plans to challenge the results in Dallas over voting issues, claiming some voters were disenfranchised, the AP has reported.

Talarico, a seminarian, campaigned statewide, often referencing the Bible, and significantly outspent Crockett on TV advertising, gaining extra attention after CBS pulled his interview with Stephen Colbert.
