Rep. Tony Gonzales of Texas ends reelection bid after admitting to affair with aide

Texas Republican Rep. Tony Gonzales announced he is withdrawing from his reelection race after admitting to an affair with a former staffer, Regina Ann Santos-Aviles, who later died by suicide.

Despite leaving the race, Gonzales said he will complete his current term in Congress.

His decision follows pressure from GOP leadership and House colleagues, as well as a House Ethics Committee investigation into his conduct.

Gonzales acknowledged his mistake and said he has reconciled with his wife, stressing he had no role in Santos-Aviles’ death, NPR has reported.

The situation has drawn bipartisan attention, with some lawmakers calling for censure or removal from committee assignments, while Republicans avoided demanding his resignation to protect their slim House majority.
