Nepal’s National Independent Party (Rastriya Swatantra), led by rapper-turned-politician Balendra Shah, is set for a landslide victory in the country’s first parliamentary election since youth-led protests ousted the long-ruling leadership.
Early results show the party winning 103 of 165 directly elected seats and leading in 21 more, while also capturing about 51% of the proportional representation vote.
The victory unseats Nepal’s historically dominant parties, the Nepali Congress and the Communist Party of Nepal (UML).
Supporters celebrated the win across constituencies, though party officials asked for restrained celebrations out of respect for lives lost during last year’s protests, NPR has reported.
The election marks a historic political shift following Gen Z-led protests that demanded accountability for corruption and poor governance, which had resulted in dozens of deaths and hundreds injured.
