Iran names Ayatollah Khamenei’s son, Mojtaba, as new supreme leader

Iran has named Mojtaba Khamenei, son of the late Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, as its new Supreme Leader.

The appointment gives him control over the Revolutionary Guard and other hardline groups, ensuring continued hardline rule in Iran.

The Revolutionary Guard and Hezbollah have expressed support for the younger Khamenei, calling him the “Leader of the blessed Islamic revolution.”

U.S. President Donald Trump has publicly rejected the selection, claiming the next Iranian leader must receive U.S. approval and warning that an unapproved leader “won’t last long,” CNBC has reported.

The Israel Defense Forces also issued a warning, saying it would target anyone involved in appointing Iran’s new Supreme Leader.
