Jury selection to begin in South Florida for 5 charged in 2021 assassination of Haitian president

Jury selection begins Monday in the U.S. federal trial of five men charged in the 2021 assassination of Haitian President Jovenel Moïse.

Arcangel Pretel Ortiz, Antonio Intriago, Walter Veintemilla, Christian Sanon, and James Solages face charges of conspiracy to kidnap or kill Moïse, with possible life sentences, and have all pleaded not guilty.

South Florida was a key hub for planning and financing the plot, with companies tied to the conspirators providing security, funds, and military support.

The conspirators initially aimed to install Sanon as president but later shifted support to Wendelle Coq Thélot, who later died in 2025 while a fugitive, the AP has reported.

In total, 11 people have been prosecuted in the U.S., while another 20, including Colombian soldiers and Haitian officials, face charges in Haiti amid stalled investigations.
