Bishop Emanuel Shaleta of Saint Peter’s Chaldean in San Diego faces multiple felony charges, including embezzlement, money laundering, and aggravated white-collar crime, after allegedly misappropriating hundreds of thousands of dollars from his church.
Authorities say he received church rent payments in cash and funneled funds through an account meant for rent assistance, with roughly $272,000 unaccounted for.
Shaleta was arrested at San Diego International Airport while attempting to leave for Germany and pleaded not guilty in court.
Investigations also allege he frequented brothels in Mexico, shared a personal bank account with a former parish secretary, and misused church funds totaling up to $1 million, Fox News has reported.
The Vatican has accepted his resignation, and Shaleta could face up to 15 years in prison if convicted, with his next court appearance scheduled for next month.
