Mojtaba Khamenei was hurt in strike that killed his father, Iran’s Cyprus ambassador confirms

Iran’s new supreme leader, Mojtaba Khamenei, was injured in a 28 February attack that killed six of his family members, including his father, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, according to Tehran’s ambassador to Cyprus.

Mojtaba sustained injuries to his legs and arms and has remained out of public view, partly due to security concerns over potential US or Israeli assassination attempts.

The attack coincided with the start of US-led airstrikes against Iran, which also targeted Tehran’s presidential complex, killing top commanders and members of the late supreme leader’s family.

Western leaders, including former US President Donald Trump, have criticized Mojtaba’s succession, while Israel has warned it may target him, The Guardian has reported.

The ambassador emphasized Iran’s nuclear program remains non-weaponized and suggested that the February strikes may have been orchestrated by Israel rather than Iran.
