Iranian soccer team leaves Australia, with seven women staying behind

Seven members of the Iran women’s national football team remained in Australia after their tournament trip, while the rest of the team returned toward Iran amid rising regional tensions.

Six players accepted humanitarian visas allowing them to stay permanently, while one initially agreed but later decided to return home, according to Australian Home Affairs Minister Tony Burke.

The players had traveled to Australia for the AFC Women’s Asian Cup before military strikes by the United States and Israel against Iran escalated conflict in the region.

Their situation drew international attention after the team stayed silent during the Iranian national anthem in their first match, prompting speculation about protest and concern for their safety if they returned, NBC News has reported.

The case has sparked political reactions from leaders including Anthony Albanese and Donald Trump, while Iranian officials deny the athletes would face punishment at home.
