Former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro has shown improved kidney function but remains in intensive care for pneumonia at DF Star Hospital in Brasilia, doctors said Sunday.
The 70-year-old, who is serving a 27-year prison sentence for leading a 2023 coup attempt, has been given additional antibiotics since Saturday.
Bolsonaro was transferred to the hospital from prison after showing high fever, chills, and elevated inflammatory markers.
His family has repeatedly petitioned Brazil’s Supreme Court to allow him to serve his sentence under house arrest, the AP has reported.
Bolsonaro, who governed from 2019 to 2022, has a history of hospitalizations dating back to a stabbing at a 2018 campaign event, and his son Flávio Bolsonaro is expected to challenge President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva in this year’s election.
