Historic wildfires in Nebraska have burned nearly 800,000 acres, causing at least one death, and are considered the largest in state history, Gov. Jim Pillen said.
The most severe blaze, the Morrill Fire, has consumed over 572,000 acres and remains only 18% contained, while three other fires — Cottonwood, Road 203, and Anderson Bridge — are also burning across the western part of the state.
A brief lull in wind gusts brought temporary relief, but red flag warnings are set to return with high temperatures, low humidity, and strong winds, worsening fire conditions.
More than 700 firefighters, along with Nebraska and Iowa National Guard personnel and federal teams, are working to contain the fires, and many residents were evacuated and have since returned home, NBC News reported.
Pillen declared a state of emergency and signed an executive order to streamline aid for livestock and residents affected by the flames.
