A Utah woman, Kouri Richins, was convicted of aggravated murder for poisoning her husband, Eric Richins, with a lethal dose of fentanyl in March 2022, while also self-publishing a children’s book about grief.
Prosecutors said she was $4.5 million in debt and sought to inherit her husband’s $4 million estate while planning a future with another man.
She was also found guilty of attempted murder, forgery, and insurance fraud, including a prior attempt to poison her husband on Valentine’s Day.
Evidence presented included life insurance policies taken out without Eric’s knowledge, incriminating text messages with her alleged affair partner, and internet searches about lethal fentanyl doses and luxury prisons, The Guardian has reported.
Sentencing is set for May 13, the day Eric would have turned 44, with the aggravated murder charge carrying 25 years to life in prison.
