SoftBank Group plans an unprecedented $500 billion AI-focused data center campus in Piketon, Ohio, which CEO Masayoshi Son claims will be the largest construction project in the U.S.
The facility, on a former uranium enrichment site, is designed to reach 10 gigawatts of power—enough to rival the world’s largest data centers—and will initially deliver 800 megawatts by early 2028 at a cost of $30–40 billion.
The project will rely on $33 billion worth of natural gas-fired electricity, with turbines already sourced and phased online through the decade.
The Trump administration is supporting the build to boost U.S. AI competitiveness against China while addressing concerns about water, electricity, and infrastructure capacity, Bloomberg has reported.
Customers for the data center are yet to be announced, but SoftBank and its partners intend to integrate advanced AI chips and equipment within the sprawling 3,700-acre campus.
