Mary Fong Lau, 80, was sentenced to two years of probation and a suspended driver’s license for a car crash in San Francisco that killed a family of four, with no jail time or home confinement.
Lau must also complete 200 hours of community service after pleading no contest to the charges.
The March 2024 crash occurred when she drove at speeds up to 70 mph and hit a bus shelter, killing Diego Cardoso de Oliveira, his one-year-old son, and later his wife and three-month-old baby.
Judge Bruce Chan cited her remorse and personal history of loss in deciding against prison, noting she would live with the knowledge of the harm caused, The Guardian has reported.
In response, the city has redesigned the West Portal bus terminal to improve safety, though pedestrian fatalities remain a concern.
