Large blast at Valero oil refinery in Texas sends smoke, flames into the air

A large explosion at the Valero refinery in Port Arthur sent smoke plumes into the air, prompting a temporary shelter-in-place for nearby residents.

Mayor Charlotte Moses reported no injuries or fatalities, and emergency teams were working to contain the fire.

The Texas Commission on Environmental Quality deployed air monitoring equipment, and the shelter order was lifted nearly 12 hours after the blast.

Residents reported a loud boom and shaking windows, while security cameras in nearby Nederland also recorded the impact, CBS News has reported.

The refinery, which processes heavy crude into gasoline, diesel, and jet fuel, has about 770 employees and a daily capacity of 435,000 barrels.
