German Chancellor Friedrich Merz said that most Syrians living in Germany should return to Syria within three years following a meeting with Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa in Berlin.

He stated that about 80% of Syrians in Germany could go back, while some skilled professionals like healthcare workers may remain.

Merz argued that the end of Syria’s civil war creates conditions for voluntary returns and future reconstruction.

The proposal has sparked both protests and support in Germany, reflecting divisions within the Syrian diaspora, Politico has reported.

Critics have raised concerns about security and human rights, while supporters see the visit as a step toward normalization and cooperation.
