Spain closes off its airspace to US planes involved in the Iran war

Spain has barred United States military aircraft involved in the Iran war from using its airspace, reinforcing its opposition to the conflict.

Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez and Defense Minister Margarita Robles called the war illegal and unjust, extending an earlier ban on U.S. use of Spanish military bases.

The move has heightened tensions with Washington, with U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio criticizing Spain’s stance and questioning NATO cooperation.

Former President Donald Trump also threatened trade consequences after Spain refused military support, the AP has reported.

Spain has positioned itself as one of Europe’s strongest critics of U.S. and Israeli actions in the conflict.
