Man charged after allegedly trying to push stranger in front of train

A 26-year-old man, Elisio Melendez, has been charged with attempted second-degree murder after allegedly trying to push a stranger in front of a train at Seattle’s Northgate light rail station on March 19.

Prosecutors say he approached the victim from behind as a train arrived and attempted to shove him onto the tracks, but the victim managed to stay upright despite being pushed twice.

Surveillance footage reportedly shows the attack was timed with the train’s arrival, and Melendez fled before being later identified and arrested on March 24.

He has denied involvement and suggested mistaken identity during questioning, while prosecutors have requested a $750,000 bail due to public safety concerns, KOMO News has reported.

Court records also note his history of mental health treatment and prior legal issues, including earlier assault allegations and competency proceedings.
