One killed and buildings damaged as magnitude 7.4 earthquake strikes Indonesia

A powerful 7.4 magnitude earthquake struck off Indonesia’s Ternate island, killing one person and causing building damage.

The quake occurred at a depth of 35 km, triggering small tsunami waves that were later declared no longer a threat.

Shaking was felt across nearby regions, including parts of Sulawesi, and several aftershocks followed.

Authorities reported minor to moderate structural damage and urged coastal residents to remain cautious, The Guardian has reported.

Indonesia, located on the seismically active Ring of Fire, frequently experiences earthquakes of this kind.
