Donald Trump has proposed allocating $152 million to begin restoring Alcatraz as part of a broader push to reopen the former prison as a symbol of law and order.
The idea, first floated in 2025, has drawn criticism from California officials, including Gavin Newsom and Nancy Pelosi, who argue it is impractical and wasteful.
Estimates suggest the full restoration could cost more than $2 billion, and the island currently lacks essential infrastructure such as water, power, and sewage systems.
The proposal is part of a larger $1.7 billion request to fund federal prison facilities, The Guardian has reported.
Alcatraz, which operated as a maximum-security prison from 1934 to 1963 and now serves as a major tourist site, was originally closed due to high maintenance costs.
