German men must ask army for permission to leave country

Germany has introduced new military service rules requiring men aged 17 to 45 to seek permission from the armed forces before leaving the country for more than three months.

The measure is part of a broader effort to strengthen military readiness amid security concerns, particularly regarding Russia and NATO’s future.

Officials say the rule is mainly intended to maintain accurate records in case of a national emergency that could require conscription.

In practice, authorities insist permits will be granted during peacetime and that exemptions may be added to reduce bureaucracy, The Telegraph has reported.

The policy has sparked debate, with critics warning it could create confusion and administrative burdens for millions of men.
