Judges are increasingly using AI to draft rulings

Federal judges across the United States are increasingly using artificial intelligence to assist with tasks like summarizing cases, analyzing filings, and drafting rulings.

A Texas judge, Xavier Rodriguez, said he uses AI to quickly generate timelines, suggest questions, and help prepare written decisions, while still relying on his own judgment.

A recent study found that more than 60% of surveyed federal judges have used AI at least once, though usage levels vary widely.

Courts are also partnering with legal technology companies to test AI tools, aiming to improve efficiency amid heavy caseloads, the Washington Post has reported.

Despite potential benefits, judges and experts emphasize the need for caution due to risks like inaccurate outputs and “hallucinated” legal citations, ensuring human oversight remains central.
