Bangladesh conducts emergency measles vaccinations as outbreak kills more than 100 children

Bangladesh is running an emergency measles-rubella vaccination campaign with support from World Health Organization, UNICEF, and the Gavi to contain an outbreak that has killed more than 100 children in less than a month.

The initial effort is targeting children aged 6 months to 5 years in high-risk districts, with plans to expand nationwide in phases.

Health officials report over 900 confirmed cases among thousands of suspected infections, raising concerns about gaps in vaccination coverage.

Measles is highly contagious and can be severe, especially for young children, making high immunization rates critical to stopping its spread, NBC News has reported.

Authorities in Bangladesh are urging parents to seek hospital care quickly for suspected cases while acknowledging past vaccine shortages and disruptions contributed to the outbreak.
