Taiwan opposition leader Cheng Li-wun traveled to China at the invitation of President Xi Jinping, describing the trip as a “journey for peace” amid rising tensions over Taiwan’s status.
It is the first visit by a Taiwanese opposition leader to China in about a decade and comes ahead of a planned Xi–Donald Trump meeting.
China, which claims Taiwan as its territory, continues to reject formal ties with Taipei and has not ruled out the use of force.
Cheng said her goal is to promote dialogue and reduce the risk of conflict between the two sides, Politico has reported.
The visit occurs alongside ongoing military pressure from China and continued U.S. arms support for Taiwan.
