Emergency crews are conducting search and rescue operations after a partial collapse of a seven-story parking garage under construction in Philadelphia’s Grays Ferry neighborhood.
According to Mayor Cherelle L. Parker, one person died after being rescued and taken to Penn Presbyterian Hospital, while two others were treated, and two people remain unaccounted for.
The structure, being built for the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia by contractor HSC Builders and Construction, experienced a progressive collapse during installation of precast concrete components by subcontractor Precast Services Incorporated.
The Philadelphia Fire Department is leading rescue efforts, but operations are ongoing and delayed due to concerns about structural instability, with safety inspections and investigations underway, Fox 29 has reported.
Officials have closed surrounding areas and warned of community impacts as engineers and city agencies work to stabilize the site and continue the search.
