Astronauts suggest naming a moon crater ‘Carroll’ after their commander’s late wife

The Artemis II astronauts set a new record for the farthest distance humans have traveled from Earth and became the first crew to observe parts of the moon’s far side.

During the mission, they spotted unnamed lunar craters and informally proposed names, including “Integrity” for their spacecraft and “Carroll” in honor of commander Reid Wiseman’s late wife.

The emotional moment, shared with mission control, included the crew reflecting on Wiseman’s personal loss and their shared experiences.

NASA will later submit the naming proposals to the International Astronomical Union for official approval, NPR has reported.

The mission highlights both a historic space milestone and a deeply personal tribute carried by the crew.
