Democrats and Republicans in the Minnesota House filed competing ethics complaints against members of the opposing party, escalating tensions over alleged misconduct.
The dispute follows House Speaker Lisa Demuth’s decision to remove Republican Reps. Elliott Engen and Walter Hudson from committee assignments after Engen’s DWI arrest, in which Hudson was a passenger.
Democrats filed an ethics complaint based on a photo showing the two lawmakers drinking at a restaurant before returning to legislative work, arguing they violated their duties.
House Democrats said the behavior warranted formal action to protect the integrity of the chamber, noting ethics complaints are rare, CBS News has reported.
Republicans countered that the committee removals were based on the police report and defended their actions, while questioning the Democrats’ motivations.
