NASA confirms fireball seen over Philly region skies was a meteor on Tuesday

People across the Philadelphia region reported seeing a bright fireball in the sky on Tuesday afternoon, prompting widespread attention.

The American Meteor Society received multiple reports of the event occurring at roughly the same time.

NASA later confirmed that the fireball was a meteor entering Earth’s atmosphere.

It was first observed about 48 miles above the Atlantic Ocean, then traveled over Long Island at around 30,000 miles per hour, NBC 10 Philadelphia has reported.

The meteor ultimately disintegrated above Galloway, New Jersey, with no reported impacts on the ground.
