Florida investigates ChatGPT, OpenAI over alleged role in FSU shooting

Florida’s attorney general announced an investigation into OpenAI over concerns about its chatbot’s alleged connection to a 2025 mass shooting at Florida State University.

Officials claim ChatGPT may have been used by the suspect in planning the attack, which left two people dead and six injured.

The suspect, Phoenix Ikner, is facing first-degree murder charges, and attorneys for victims are also preparing lawsuits against OpenAI.

The attorney general said the probe also examines broader risks, including alleged misuse of AI in encouraging harmful or illegal activity, the USA Today has reported.

OpenAI has not been proven responsible, and the investigation is ongoing as authorities review the case details.
