A freshman at the University of Southern California lost an eye after being struck by a “less-lethal” projectile fired by a Department of Homeland Security agent during a protest in Los Angeles.
The student, Tucker Collins, was photographing a demonstration outside a federal detention center when he was hit, according to his attorney.
His lawyer claims the force used violated a court order restricting such crowd-control tactics against journalists and observers.
Department of Homeland Security said officers followed training, used minimal force, and issued warnings while responding to alleged violence from protesters, The Guardian has reported.
The incident has raised renewed concerns about law enforcement use of crowd-control weapons at demonstrations in Los Angeles.
