New York prosecutors are investigating sexual assault allegations against Democratic Rep. Eric Swalwell following reports published by the San Francisco Chronicle detailing claims from a former staffer.

The woman alleged a pattern of inappropriate sexual behavior, including coercion, intoxicated encounters, and an incident in New York in which she says she woke up injured and later described as sexual assault.

Swalwell has denied the allegations, calling them politically motivated and has threatened legal action against his accuser.

The accusations prompted him to suspend his California governor campaign amid growing political pressure from both Democrats and Republicans, CBS News has reported.

The Manhattan District Attorney’s Office has opened an investigation while the case continues to generate significant political fallout in Congress.
