Polls have closed in Peru’s presidential and legislative elections, with no clear winner emerging in a crowded field of 35 candidates amid ongoing political instability.
Early exit polls show right-leaning candidate Keiko Fujimori in the lead, followed by leftist and centrist rivals, but no one is close to the 50% needed to win outright.
If the results hold, the top two candidates will advance to a runoff scheduled for June 7.
The election comes after years of rapid presidential turnover and widespread voter frustration over corruption and weak governance, Al-Jazeera has reported.
Many voters expressed deep disillusionment with the political system as Peru continues to struggle with instability and rising crime.
