On Monday, Honduras initiated a large-scale prison sweep similar to that of El Salvador, resulting in the arrest of a suspect involved in a pool-hall shooting that claimed the lives of 11 individuals on Saturday.

Authorities have begun investigating the possibility that the pool-hall shooting was an act of revenge following a gang-related massacre of 46 female inmates at a women’s prison last week, which stands as one of the most horrific incidents at such a facility in recent memory.

The Honduran government has made a commitment to combat gang violence and has implemented curfews as part of its efforts, the Associated Press has reported.

During a raid conducted to confiscate contraband in one of the prisons, the military police, who have assumed control over the nation’s penitentiaries, shared photos of male inmates seated in rows, their legs spread apart and touching, as a display of force.

These tactics, reminiscent of those employed by El Salvadoran President Nayib Bukele during his aggressive measures against gangs, garnered attention last year.

While Bukele’s stringent methods resulted in human rights abuses, they also garnered popularity within the Central American nation.
