Human remains with skulls intentionally deformed into heart-like shapes have been unearthed at an archaeological site in Mexico, revealing a unique and intriguing discovery.

Researchers from Mexico’s National Institute of Anthropology and History (INAH) made this exceptional finding at the La Ferrería Archaeological Zone in Durango state, located in the lower northwest region of the country.

During recent excavations at the site, archaeologists uncovered the skeletal remains of 16 individuals within the Casa Colorada architectural complex, Newsweek has reported.

Although most of the skeletons were fragmented, three adult remains were remarkably well-preserved.

Among these discoveries, the skulls of two individuals displayed unmistakable cranial modifications, clearly indicating intentional deformation.

The observed skull deformation resulted in a shape resembling a heart when viewed from certain angles.

While this particular practice had not been previously reported at this site, the intentional shaping of skulls has been documented in various ancient cultures worldwide, including within Mesoamerica, which encompassed a significant part of Mexico and Central America.

In some isolated locations across the globe, this custom continues to persist even today. The finding sheds light on ancient cultural practices and offers a fascinating glimpse into the history of human civilization in the region.
