During an annual event promoting tours of Maine’s cherished lighthouses, a distressing incident unfolded as a wooden walkway gave way, resulting in the injury of eleven lighthouse enthusiasts who plummeted into the muddy flats below.
The unfortunate incident occurred at the Doubling Point Lighthouse in Arrowsic on a Saturday afternoon.
The lighthouse was welcoming the public as part of Maine Open Lighthouse Day, an occasion during which the state’s picturesque lighthouses are accessible to visitors, the Associated Press reported.
Deputy Chief Chris Cummings of the Bath Fire Department reported that out of the eleven injured individuals, five required transport to nearby hospitals.
The walkway collapse occurred during low tide, causing some of the victims to fall from heights ranging between eight to ten feet, ultimately landing in a partially rocky mudflat below.
Cummings noted that multiple public safety departments swiftly responded to the scene to provide assistance.
