The two-week-long search for an escaped convicted murderer from a Pennsylvania prison concluded on Wednesday with the capture of Danelo Cavalcante, according to officials.

Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro and Pennsylvania State Police Lt. Col. George Bivens confirmed his capture during a press conference.

Cavalcante was apprehended shortly after 8 a.m. by a tactical team leading the manhunt, and no gunfire was exchanged.

Cavalcante was found in a wooded area within the law enforcement perimeter, as disclosed by a law enforcement source to CBS News senior investigative producer Pat Milton early Wednesday. His arrest transpired without any incidents.

Footage from CBS Philadelphia’s helicopter depicted a group of officers dressed in camouflage escorting Cavalcante, who appeared to be wearing a Philadelphia Eagles sweatshirt, CBS News reported.

This footage was captured after tactical teams converged on an area in northern West Chester County where an aircraft had detected a heat signal overnight, according to Bivens.

Around midnight, a “burglar alarm” went off at a residence within the established perimeter, but when officers investigated, neither Cavalcante nor anyone else was found at the location.

However, a heat signal that ultimately led to his capture was later detected in that vicinity after 1 a.m.

Subsequently, the aircraft began tracking the signal, but the presence of lightning storms in the region prevented the aircraft from continuing its flight.

Tactical team members then established a new perimeter around the area where the heat signal had been detected, and the manhunt resumed on Wednesday morning.

Bivens noted, “They were able to move in very quietly, they had the element of surprise.” Cavalcante attempted to escape by crawling “through thick underbrush” while taking his rifle with him.

He resisted arrest, but a police dog subdued him, and officers took him into custody by force. Bivens mentioned that Cavalcante sustained only a “minor bite wound,” and there were no other injuries.

Following his capture, he was transported to a police station in Avondale for questioning and will eventually be transferred to a state prison.
