Trump defends Mike Johnson at Mar-a-Lago amid threats to House speakership

House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) received public support from former President Donald Trump amid the threat of losing his speakership.

The meeting between Johnson and Trump at Mar-a-Lago comes as Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) filed a motion to remove Johnson as speaker.

Trump expressed confidence in Johnson’s leadership despite facing challenges with a slim majority and needing Democratic support to pass legislation.

Johnson’s appearance with Trump is seen as an effort to gain credibility among hard-right party members.

During the meeting, Trump criticized the reauthorization of Section 702 of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA) but acknowledged the bipartisan passage of the bill, the Washington Examiner has reported.

Additionally, Johnson and Trump announced House GOP actions to address election fraud, including a bill requiring proof of citizenship to vote.

Trump also called for the closure of the southern border, criticizing the Biden administration’s handling of immigration.

Despite Trump’s claims of election fraud, Johnson has not made similar assertions.
