Helicopter carrying Iran’s hard-line president crashes in foggy, mountainous region

A helicopter carrying Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi, the foreign minister, and other officials reportedly crashed in the mountainous northwest of Iran, prompting a significant rescue operation in a foggy forest and calls for public prayers.

The incident follows recent tensions with Israel due to Iran’s drone-and-missile attack and near-weapons-grade uranium enrichment.

Additionally, Iran faces ongoing protests over economic and women’s rights issues, heightening the situation’s sensitivity.

The helicopter made a “hard landing” near Jolfa, close to Azerbaijan, though details are conflicting, the Associated Press reported.

State media did not provide information on Raisi’s condition, but prayer gatherings were broadcast nationwide.

The rescue efforts were challenged by poor weather, including heavy rain and wind.
