Secret Service and U.S. Park Police retreated from Lafayette Square near the White House on Saturday after being surrounded by pro-Palestine protesters.
The demonstrators, protesting U.S. support for Israel in its conflict with Hamas, chanted slogans rejecting a two-state solution, called for an “intifada,” and condemned President Biden.
They also encircled the police, forcing them to retreat while shouting hostile chants.
Reporter Julio Rosas noted that the police were chased out of the park after an attempt to arrest someone, and they remained on the boundaries of the protest, Mediaite has reported.
The protesters held signs with messages opposing a two-state solution and referencing the year 1948.
The demonstration included smoke flares from protesters and the use of pepper spray by the police. Biden has faced criticism from progressives within his party for his support of Israel.
