‘Shaken’ Danish PM cancels appointments after street attack

Danish authorities stated that an attack on Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen, which left her “shaken” but unharmed, is not believed to be politically motivated.

A 39-year-old Polish man, who assaulted Frederiksen in a Copenhagen square on Friday evening, has been detained until June 20.

Prosecutor Taruh Sekeroglu indicated the man is suspected of violence against a public servant and is considered a flight risk.

Frederiksen, 46, posted on Instagram expressing her need for “peace and quiet” and gratitude for the support she received. She sustained a minor whiplash injury and went to the hospital for a check-up.

During the court hearing, the prosecution described the suspect as mentally unbalanced and intoxicated. The man, who denied committing a crime, couldn’t recall his actions at the time of the incident, the AFP has reported.

Witnesses reported seeing the man shove Frederiksen, causing her to stumble. French President Emmanuel Macron condemned the attack and wished Frederiksen a swift recovery.
