Armed Israeli security officers briefly detained two French consular employees at the Sanctuary of Eleona in Jerusalem, a French-administered Christian site, sparking a diplomatic dispute between France and Israel.
The incident occurred just before French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot’s visit to the region.
Barrot condemned the unauthorized Israeli entry and detention, calling it “unacceptable” and warning it could strain relations, Politico has reported.
The event comes amid growing tensions between France and Israel over the Gaza conflict and Israel’s actions in Lebanon. France plans to summon Israel’s ambassador over the incident.
