President Donald Trump threatened BRICS member states with 100% tariffs if they attempt to replace the US dollar as the global reserve currency.
He emphasized that countries in the bloc, including Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa, must commit to not creating a new currency or backing an alternative to the US dollar.
Trump reiterated this position on his social media platform, calling any such attempt a challenge to America.
The BRICS group has discussed creating another reserve currency, especially after Western sanctions on Russia, DW has reported.
Trump also announced plans for 25% tariffs on imports from Canada and Mexico, with a decision on including oil still pending, influenced by concerns over oil pricing and illegal immigration.
