N.J. judge allows use of powerful DNA tool in quadruple murder trial

A New Jersey judge ruled that prosecutors can use DNA evidence from the STRmix tool in the upcoming trial of Paul Caneiro, charged with the 2018 murder of his brother and his family.

STRmix, which analyzes small, complex DNA samples, was deemed reliable by Judge Marc Lemieux, despite defense objections.

Caneiro, who has pleaded not guilty, allegedly killed his brother, sister-in-law, and two children before setting their house and his own on fire.

STRmix, which has revolutionized DNA analysis, was key in linking Caneiro to DNA found on bloodstained jeans, NBC News has reported.

Jury selection is set for May.
