Portuguese Prime Minister Luís Montenegro’s government lost a vote of confidence, likely leading to Portugal’s third general election in three years.

The vote, 142 to 88, toppled his right-wing minority government.

Montenegro’s business dealings, particularly with his company Spinumviva, sparked an opposition inquiry.

The company continued receiving payments from clients, including a casino group under review for its gambling concession, raising questions about its income and services.

Despite his claims of legal consultancy, the Bar Association is investigating possible illegal activity, the BBC has reported.

With the Socialists now leading in polls, new elections are expected in May, though no major party is eager for a snap election.
