Trump touts ‘very strong’ Alcatraz as Bureau of Prisons assessing reopening prison

President Trump has proposed reopening Alcatraz as a larger federal prison, prompting the Bureau of Prisons to begin assessing the idea.

BOP Director William Marshall said the agency would “vigorously pursue” the president’s agenda, though critics point to the high cost and impracticality of restoring the facility, which closed in 1963.

Experts note existing federal prisons already need $2 billion in repairs, and House Speaker Emerita Nancy Pelosi dismissed the proposal as unserious, emphasizing Alcatraz’s status as a national park and tourist site, ABC News has reported.
