Rapid wildfire burns historic gold mining town in California

A fast-moving wildfire, part of the TCU September Lightning Complex, engulfed California’s historic Chinese Camp Town, forcing evacuations and burning at least five homes.

The fire has spread to 10 square miles with no containment, prompting CalFire to request additional engines, dozers, and aircraft.

Residents attempted to protect their homes with sand and tree branches until firefighters arrived, and an RV on one property was damaged, The Hill has reported.

The blaze, caused by lightning, is one of more than a dozen fires across the state, threatening the Gold Rush–era town originally settled by Chinese miners after facing persecution in nearby camps.
