The mother of 25-year-old Jaylen Lewis is suing Mississippi Capitol Police officers, the department, and the state Department of Public Safety after he was fatally shot during a traffic stop on Sept. 25, 2022.
Officers Stephen Frederick and Michael Rhinewalt, who were indicted for manslaughter and have pleaded not guilty, opened fire after Lewis reversed his car into a police vehicle.
The lawsuit alleges Lewis did not threaten or brandish a weapon and seeks policy changes to prevent similar incidents, as well as compensation for emotional damages.
The Mississippi Department of Public Safety declined to comment on the pending litigation, ABC News has reported.
Rhinewalt and another officer are also facing a separate lawsuit and aggravated assault charges in connection with a different 2022 shooting.
